The Red Team Analysis Society is a consultancy and a think tank or research institute devoted to strategic foresight, early warning, and risk management. We focus on national and international security issues, politics and geopolitics, as well as new tech. Our aim is to help all actors using efficient, high quality and actionable strategic foresight, early warning, and risk management for political and geopolitical uncertainties. We promote best practice, notably grounded in science.
The brief story behind The Red Team Analysis Society
In 2013, Dr Lavoix created The Red Team Analysis Society following her foundational work with the Global Futures Forum. The Red Team Analysis Society was first located in London as Dr Lavoix had lived in London for over 10 years and was awarded her MSc and PhD by the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
With time, and having moved to France, Dr Lavoix decided in 2020 it made more sense to move the activity to Paris. Check our business profile on Google. Our activity remains however international.
Why also a research activity and publishing on the web?
Members and readers can use our website and publishing platform to develop a better understanding of the world around them and of the challenges ahead, while getting acquainted with anticipatory approaches. Citizens and practitioners can learn through practical cases how to identify critical issues for the future, and, more generally, how to foresee and warn. For advanced users, the real life cases presented also aim at improving anticipation through the exploration of tools and methodologies, the development of lab-type experiments, and the discussion of challenges to anticipation.
We fund our think tank open access publications* mainly through our memberships, consulting and training activities, which allow us remaining fully independent and non-partisan. As a result, our clients and members can benefit from the most advanced, innovative and tested approaches.
About a name
The name The Red Team Analysis Society (Red Team, Red Team Analysis or RTAS for short) is inspired by Red Team activity or Red Teaming, used initially in the U.S. Army to simulate the activity of opponents in war-gaming or strategic simulations (for more on red team and red teaming activities in general see the excellent website the Red Team Journal). By extension, RTAS aims at promoting a strategic foresight analysis grounded in science that struggles against our many cognitive, normative and emotional biases. To reach this goal, we use various tools and methodologies. We promote thinking out of the box, struggle against mediocrity and “fake news”, and are not limited by “politically correct” approaches. Interestingly in the Soviet Union, similar activities were called Blue or Green Team activity (courtesy of Levon Sevunts @LevonSevunts).
