Thank you for this overview. Yes, it is horrifying -- did not know about the degree, severity and intensity of those nuclear tests.

Kazakhstan coincidence: in nirth central Pennsylvania in about 2011, as fracking increased exponentially in PA, on my way to an anti-fracking organizing meeting I asked directions from a passerby. He turned out to be from Kazakhstan. He was a worker in the fracking industry and said he had come to Pennsylvania to get away from the very high radiation exposure he had been experiencing in Kazakhstan.

Workers in the oil and gas shalefields in the U.S. experience high injury, illness and death rates for many reasons. But this very intelligent guy had calculated his chances of survival and reasonable health as much better if he got away from the very deep fracking operations in Kazakhstan.

Talk about displacement! Thanks for this deeper, broader background snapshot of what suffering Kazakhstan has been through. I will always remember that chance conversation and remind everyone to listen and ask questions whenever you meet people from other countries and whenever you meet people who work in industries that are harming them as well as harming climate, biodiversity, surface waters, health and community well being.

That worker from Kazakhstan seemed to aim to get out of the fracking industry completely as soon as he had a bit more money put away, to protect his health. I hope he achieved his goal!

Thanks again for this jarring, fascinating article.
