Here's a note sent yesterday to another member of the little group of old, mostly retired, technical nerds that get together via ZOOM once per week.

Thanks Dr. Forsberg,

At this stage of the game, it seems silly to assume that a US “nuclear renaissance” shouldn’t be sustainable or rendered so with anything other than a PUREX-type reprocessing technology. It’s also silly to assume that it should implemented with a few little converter-type reactors scattered all over the country rather than with clusters of big breeder reactors close-coupled to & surrounding the fuel recycling plant rendering their fuel cycles sustainable/renewable. Those clusters should & almost surely would soon be surrounded with the also-new manufacturing facilities that could make America great again.

The Russians developed/demonstrated what seems to be a reasonable sounding pyro-based reprocessing technology ~ two decades ago but still aren’t using it to refuel their commercial-scale BN-800 breeder reactor because they are more competent than we are about addressing their country’s technical issues. The Pu within the vibropacked MOX fueling its big breeder(s) was recovered from “spent” LWR fuel via a PUREX-like process , see Microsoft Word - FR17 76 - Corrected.docx.

Uranium for the U.S. Nuclear Renaissance - 1: Meeting Unprecedented Requirements - The Red Team Analysis Society is another “educated” opinion piece concluding that US decision makers & their advisors should also quit pretending that it’d be a good idea to implement a “nuclear renaissance” with converter-type reactors, regardless of how “advanced”, modular, and otherwise special they might be*.

Again, a properly implemented renaissance wouldn’t require any newly discovered/mined/processed/enriched uranium whether it’s somehow been “American made” or purchased from foreigners .

*”educated” because it’s based upon facts & realistic numbers, not faith, hopes, & prayers.
